Details: 🐻🐻🐻FUN BLACK BEAR FACTS: LOCATION: Black Bears are found only in North America, where the population is about 700,000. SIZE: Black Bears (scientifically “Ursus Americanus”) range from 4-7 ft long from nose to tail, and 2-3 feet high when on all fours. They weigh 180-400 lbs, although the heaviest recorded was 900 lbs. LIFESPAN: Black bears live on average 19 years in the wild, although the oldest recorded was 39 in the wild, and 44 in captivity. SKILLS: Black Bears can run 25-30 mph and are strong enough to turn over a 300 lb. boulder with just one paw! They’re excellent tree climbers and pretty good swimmers too! They can even break into cars to search for food. HIBERNATION: Black Bears hibernate from October to April each year. During this time they don’t drink, eat, pee, or poo! Their body feeds on fat they’ve built up over the rest of the year and they conserve energy by dropping their heart rate and slowing their breath. DIET: Black Bears eat grass, plants, fruit, and sometimes small mammals, fish, insects, nuts, and honey. REPRODUCTION: Female black bears breed only every other year, with a gestation period of 60-70 days. They produce 2-3 cubs at a time (6 max) and mothers stay with their cubs only about 18 months after born. COLOR: Despite being called “Black”, they can actually be blue-gray, light brown, or even white! White black bears are known as the Spirit Bear or Kermode and live on the west coast of Canada. WHO’D WIN IN A FIGHT?: If a Black Bear and a Grizzly Bear were to fight, put your money on the Grizzly. They’re larger in size and weight, and more aggressive and powerful than Black Bears. WHAT TO DO IF YOU SEE ONE: If you encounter a Black Bear, the best advice is to remain facing the bear and slowly retreat away walking backwards. DON’T run, and if they charge, stand your ground and shout.
